Can a trampoline be left out in winter? In most cases, you can safely leave your trampoline outside, but it might be necessary for you to take a number of precautions in order to protect it. In addition, it is equally important that you take the necessary measures to protect your backyard and even your neighborhood from a flying trampoline, which can easily occur in any area that experiences high winds.

Things to Consider

The first thing you have to ask yourself if whether or not you have a lot of significant weather in the area where you live. Does it get really cold there or are there typically several days where you and the kids can actually jump on the trampoline, even though it is technically winter? Do you usually get a lot of snow? If you do, you might not even see your trampoline for several months, especially if you live in one of the areas that has a tendency to get several feet of snow all at one time. Even that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t store it outside. Snow in and of itself will not hurt the trampoline.

Your bigger concern is leaving a trampoline outdoors when very high winds are present. Chances are, you have probably seen someone’s trampoline that has ended up moved several feet, flipped over up against the fence. Perhaps one even managed to find its way into somebody else’s yard, all because the wind carried it there. Remember, trampolines are lightweight devices that have a lot of space underneath them where the wind can get under them and literally pick them up. It really doesn’t take very much to sling one of these things right over the top of your fence. If you live in an area that has a lot of high winds during the winter, you can still leave it outside, but make sure you tether it to something sturdy so it doesn’t become a projectile that can hit someone else.

Your next concern will be making sure that the surface of the trampoline is well protected. You want it to be in the same shape that it was in the last time you used it so in some cases, you might want to put a cover over it so that you don’t have to worry about it becoming overly weathered. This is something you might want to consider if you live in an area that gets a lot of extreme wind and flooding during the winter, such as along the east coast. Typically, as long as you secure the trampoline properly and it is covered, you can leave it outside all year long.

Trampolines can be a lot of fun but they are also rather large. This makes it very difficult to store a trampoline indoors, even if you have ample garage space or you have a lot of room in a shed or similar out building. This forces most people to store their trampolines outdoors no matter what time of year it is. Rest assured, it can be safely done. It just requires a little extra effort on your part.
